Vessel Maintenance Manager
Position Function:
This position shall have direct responsibility for supervision of all Maintenance Department trades personnel wherever assigned and Vessel personnel assigned to the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility or any location where Steamship Authority vessels may be under repair or overhaul.
Duties And Responsibilities:
- Direct responsibility for the supervision of all Maintenance Department trades personnel, wherever assigned, and Vessel personnel assigned to the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility or at any location where Steamship Authority vessels may be under repair or overhaul.
- Shall direct all Maintenance Department and Vessel personnel assigned to the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility, Falmouth Maintenance Shop, Hyannis Maintenance Shop and ensure that all work assignments are completed in a safe, efficient, and timely manner, while adhering to the guidelines set forth in the Authority’s Collective Bargaining Agreements.
- Responsible for assessing manpower requirements and planning, scheduling and prioritizing work assignments to ensure the Authority’s vessels, terminals and support facilities are maintained in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner.
- Ensure maintenance personnel maintain all required licenses, certifications, and applicable training, including tracking renewals and coordinating continuing education as needed.
- Responsible for the oversight of payroll records and documentation for Maintenance Department personnel, including daily work reports, vacation and sick leave.
- Responsible for the maintenance, installation and repair of equipment operated by personnel in the shops.
- Shall be responsible for all stockroom and warehouse activities associated with the Falmouth Warehouse and Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility.
- Shall act as the onsite Safety Compliance Manager at the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility, managing all aspects of safety, including but not limited to personal protective equipment (PPE) and job hazard analysis (JHA), and establishing a documented training program for all employees assigned to the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility and maintenance staff assigned to all other SSA locations.
- Shall act as the onsite Environmental Compliance Manager at the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility, ensuring best management practices are performed as outlined in all SSA Environmental programs and plans.
- Responsible for investigation of and preparation of reports on work-related injuries.
- Plan and coordinate with other department management personnel to identify and procure material and equipment necessary for all work assignments prior to each vessel’s annual overhaul and repair period.
- Shall meet and review progress of Vessel Overhaul and Repair periods on a weekly basis with the Director of Marine Operations, Director of Engineering and Maintenance and other department management personnel.
- Shall coordinate and work closely with Port Engineer, Facilities Engineer, TAG.
- Ambassador and role model for the SQMS with an engaging communication and influencing style able to work with all levels of the business to effect change and positive outcomes.
- Shall be available to manage the Fairhaven Vessel Maintenance Facility on weekends as required and respond to emergency calls at all times.
- Perform other duties as required by supervisor.
Required Knowledge:
- Must possess a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering, equivalent marine experience or shipyard management experience (USCG License preferred).
- Computer literate (MS-Word, Excel, Project and CMMS programs preferred).
- Knowledge in the repair and maintenance of main propulsion and auxiliary systems on vessels.
- Experience supervising various trades personnel in the repair and maintenance of ships.
- General understanding and familiarity with United States Coast Guard regulations for the repair and construction of commercial vessels.
- Familiarity with Subchapter H, I, and K USCG Regulations (preferred).
- Ability to interpret and comprehend engineering drawings.
- Ability to plan work assignments and evaluate manpower resources to develop production schedules for the overhaul and repair of the Authority’s vessels and support facilities.
